One day, the sun, around which the earth orbits, will die. The sun is basically a massive nuclear reactor, fuelled by hydrogen. As hydrogen is fused into helium, energy is released, in the form of light and heat. Eventually, the hydrogen in the sun will run out, and what is left of the sun, the helium core, will collapse on itself. The increased pressure will bloat the sun into a red giant. Essentially the outer surface of the sun, the sun’s atmosphere, will expand, and it is estimated that it will expand by approximately 170 million kilometres, enough to engulf mercury, venus and earth. Just enough to burn up the planet earth, completely.
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?”
– 2 Peter 3:9-12
In the universe, there are suns that die the death of a supernova: suddenly explode and eject most of its mass over a short period of time. Remarkably, the sun of our solar system will not do this – it does not have enough mass. Instead, our sun will enlarge into a red giant, and become precisely large enough to burn up the planet earth as per 2 Peter 3:9-12, before dissipating into a white dwarf and a nebula.
The movie Sunshine (2007) imagines humans trying to re-ignite a dying sun, using some kind of super nuclear bomb. Alas, trying to spark a dying sun into life is equivalent to trying to jump start a car that has run out of petrol.
Unlike science fiction, science says, there is simply no way around it. One day, the sun will die, and as it dies, the earth and all the works therein will burn up.
At that point, those who want to live must be Christian, born again in an incorruptible, immortal body.
One might insist, no, humans can build spaceships, and embark on interstellar space travel, in search of a new planet. First, the human body was not designed to handle space: neither the lack of gravity, nor the radiation, nor the extreme cold. Second, it would take a lifetime to simply leave the solar system. According to the laws of physics, nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. Third, there is probably no other planet out there that can support life, let alone human life.
To add to all that, I would suggest that the sun does not have billions of years left, but rather slightly over 1000 years. It might be years, decades or centuries after the Millennial Reign, but I doubt it would be more.
Whatever the case might be, a day will come, for sure, when this world will end. Science says so. Scripture says so.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
– 1 John 2:15-17
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
– Revelation 21:1-2
“And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.”
– Revelation 21:23-26
